When the car becomes a packhorse, there are a few important points to consider: The load should be well secured. The maximum payload, including the driver and front passenger, must not be exceeded. And the tire pressure has to go up.

As the Tire Safety Initiative of the German Road Safety Council has now announced, the latter rarely happens. As a rule, this has directly noticeable effects that can even be dangerous in the end.

The heavier a car is loaded, the higher the tire pressure must be. That is why two values ​​are always given for the two axles on the pressure information in the entrance on the driver’s side or behind the fuel filler flap; one for normal loading and one for full load.

If the information is disregarded, there is a risk of damage to the tires, increased wear and also a longer braking distance, which is already unusually long due to the weight.

It becomes clear at first glance that the tires are suffering from the greater load. Without increasing the pressure, the tires are compressed significantly more. This also increases the contact area, which increases both tire wear and fuel consumption.

The tires also heat up more, are beaten through much more and can ultimately suffer damage as a result. Due to the higher temperature, the tires become softer at the same time, which inevitably increases the braking distance.

Tires are also a part of vehicle damping. However, this can only be guaranteed if the pressure is optimal. If the pressure is too low, the damping decreases, whereby the actual shock absorbers and ultimately the entire chassis are more stressed.

It is therefore advisable to check the pressure at the nearest petrol station before loading and to increase it if necessary. This can be done quickly in just a few simple steps.
